How this calculator works
This calculator works out a part-time salary from a full-time salary and the hours you work. It divides your part-time weekly hours by the full-time weekly hours to find the fraction of full-time, then applies it to the full-time annual salary. The result is your part-time annual gross pay, with monthly and weekly equivalents and the percentage of full-time hours.
Built on weekly hours, not days
Unlike the Pro-Rata Salary calculator, which works in days per week, this one uses weekly hours — the most accurate basis when your part-time pattern is set in hours rather than days. Employers sometimes round part-time hours or apply contractual rules, so check your contract for the exact weekly hours before relying on the figures.
Formula
fraction = partTimeHours ÷ fullTimeHours partTimeAnnual = fullTimeSalary × fraction monthlyPay = partTimeAnnual ÷ 12
Worked example
- ›Full-time salary £40,000, 40 full-time hours/week, 24 part-time hours/week
- ›Fraction = 24 ÷ 40 = 0.6 (60%)
- ›Part-time annual = £40,000 × 0.6 = £24,000
- ›Part-time monthly = £24,000 ÷ 12 = £2,000
Frequently asked questions
How is part-time salary calculated here?
Your part-time weekly hours are divided by the full-time weekly hours to give a fraction, which is applied to the full-time annual salary: part-time annual = full-time salary × (part-time hours ÷ full-time hours).
Should I use this or the Pro-Rata calculator?
Use this one when your pattern is set in weekly hours. If your part-time role is defined by days per week, the Pro-Rata Salary calculator — which works in days — is the better fit.
What if my working pattern changes?
Update the part-time hours per week to the new value. The annual, monthly and weekly figures and the percentage of full-time all update together.
What is my full-time equivalent salary?
It is the full-time annual salary you entered — the figure your part-time pay is a fraction of. The percentage row shows how much of it you earn.
